Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to high eye pressure. It can lead to vision loss if left untreated. Treatment options include prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser procedures, and various surgical techniques to lower eye pressure and preserve vision.
Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, which is why it's sometimes called the "silent thief of sight." Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection. Our eye doctors can diagnose glaucoma through a comprehensive eye exam that includes measuring eye pressure, checking the optic nerve, and assessing your field of vision.
Surgery is usually considered when medications and/or laser treatments fail to adequately control eye pressure, or if side effects from drops become intolerable. Your ophthalmologist will recommend surgery based on the severity of your glaucoma, rate of progression, and response to previous treatments.
Glaucoma surgery is typically not painful. It is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation. Mild discomfort or irritation is common during recovery, which usually lasts a few weeks. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days, but you'll need follow-up visits to monitor healing and eye pressure.
